Program Coordinator - Susan Wilson Gahon
Susan Wilson-Gahan is Program Coordinator for the Health and Physical Education degree programs (Primary and Secondary) and Lecturer in the Faculty of Business, Education, Law and Arts at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). She was a member of the Sport, Health and Physical Education specialisation program development and accreditation team and has been successfully reappointed to her Program Coordinator leadership role four times.
Susan is a PhD candidate, examining the significance of socioecological influences and impacts on the development of athletes to the highest levels of elite sport. The research is phenomenological and recounted through storying life history. Other research interests are in health education and health promotion, and HPE curriculum and assessment. Susan has co-authored a research book Health and Physical Education: Preparing Educators for the Future, first published by Cambridge University Press in 2012, with a 2nd Edition published in 2015.
Prior to entering academia, Susan was a curriculum leader and secondary school teacher of health education and physical education for 33 years, with additional experience in primary school teaching and special education. She worked at the Queensland Studies Authority as Senior Education Officer on projects related to the Queensland Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting (QCAR) Framework, as a member of the Years 1–9 Essential Learnings and Standards curriculum development team and as a writer for the QCAR Assessment Bank.
Susan is passionate about the holistic nature of health and wellbeing and the part health and wellbeing plays in academic engagement and outcomes. She has a continuing involvement in physical activity and sports organisation at all levels.
